AT&T wants to buy T-Mobile

AT&T Inc. announced on Sunday its intent to buy cell service provider T-Mobile from its owner, Deutsche Telekom, for $39 billion. Keep in mind the deal has not yet gone through — it would take about a year and could potentially run into difficulty with the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission — though both companies' boards have already approved. AT&T is trying to look appealing to federal regulators by also spending $8 billion to strengthen broadband service, especially in rural areas, fitting into a stated goal of the FCC and the Obama administration.

If the deal closes, this would reduce the number of big cell phone carriers in America to three.

If everything does go through, AT&T's 86 million customers will combine with T-Mobile's 34 million customers to create the largest user group of any mobile carrier at 120 million customers (eclipsing Verizon's 94 million).

Part of this could be for compatibility. T-Mobile phones use different network technologies than the other big carriers, Verizon and Sprint, but the same type as AT&T (except when it comes to 3G wireless data). Another part of it is that AT&T wants T-Mobile's cell towers. This deal would give them new infrastructure equivalent to what would take about five years or more to build on their own.

Casey Chan at Gizmodo has a pretty good write-up of the situation. Chan focuses mainly on what might happen in the future (while also mentioning that T-Mobile's last-in-the-pack position gave it chances to try out new things—for example, they were the first U.S. carrier to offer Android phones):
AT&T could slowly integrate T-Mobile customers into the fold like what Verizon did when they swallowed Alltel. Which means that T-Mobile might stick around for a few more months after the acquisition closes, and then be absorbed into AT&T, disappearing forever. Another, more hopeful, scenario would be for AT&T to turn T-Mobile into a low-cost carrier with dirt cheap plans (which they kinda were already) but that seems less likely given the bill-ee-ons AT&T just paid for it.

At Saturday's White House Correspondents Dinner, also known affectionately as Nerdprom (where Seth Meyers killed it with a set focused mainly on Donald Trump—click here to watch it), a reporter from the National Journal's Hotline on Call caught up with Newt Gingrich to ask what was up with his whole maybe-campaign thing. He does already have a site, after all.

He said in response that he would be in by the 10th or 11th, but he didn't provide any more details, such as potential location, although he might choose to return to Georgia for that. Mark your calendars, I guess!

Previously, he said this when asked about a campaign: "I would just say to folks who are really curious: Watch Facebook and Twitter in the next week. I think you'll have all the information you need." However, he still needs time to "untangle himself from a web of business ventures that would complicate his candidacy in the eyes of the Federal Election Commission." Oh, what a tangled web we weave! These tangles will also keep him out of the first Republican candidates' debate, which will be this Thursday in South Carolina, because participants need to have filed exploratory committee papers with the FEC and he can't do that yet.

He's going to address the Georgia Republican Party convention on May 13 in Macon. Then, later this month, he's going to Iowa and New Hampshire, two early primary states, and in New Hampshire will meet with former Senate candidate Ovide Lamontagne, who has a pretty cool name.

If you've ever wanted to have your very own "RESPECT MY SLEEP" moment, well, now might be the chance you need: casting calls for Oxygen's Bad Girls Club and Love Games are coming to Atlanta.

Both shows bring together casts of people to live in "beautiful mansions" and have their lives taped. The more fighting and volatility, the better. Love Games focuses more on competing for love while also residing in a mansion.

For both shows, the call is on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Publik Draft House, 654 Peachtree Road. Applicants must be over 21 and bring a recent picture of themselves, which will not be returned.

For more details, or how to apply by e-mail, visit the page for Bad Girls Club or Love Games.

Also, a trio of cooking-related shows are seeking participants. The concepts are pretty out there—one even involves IKEA—check out this Omnivore post for more."
