The Met presents summer encores at local movie theaters
Beat the summer heat with opera
- Ken Howard/ Metropolitan Opera
- The Met's LIve in HD Summer Encore series begins with a showing of Anthony Minghella's stunning production of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" on Wednesday, June 15 at 6:30 pm.
Sometimes the glacial air-conditioning of the cineplex is the best way to beat the heat in Atlanta. The problem? Most summer blockbusters clock in at under two hours, churning you back out onto the hot asphalt just when your extremities have started to grow accustomed to that lovely frostbitten feeling. Fortunately, this summer, opera fans can indulge in hours of cold air while taking in some great music. On Wednesday evenings in June and July, the Met will show encores of its most popular live broadcasts from this year and years past. The series kicks off Wednesday night, June 15, with a showing of 2009's stunning production of Madama Butterfly at 6:30 pm at local theaters including the Hollywood 24 in Chamblee, Perimeter Pointe and Merchant's Walk.
