Culture Grab: Maya Angelou is pissed

Train surfing and the Menstruation Machine are not different words for the same thing.

>> Misquoting famous people on a bumper sticker is one thing. Paraphrasing the revered words of the late Martin Luther King, Jr. on his own memorial is a sacrilege, and, Maya Angelou is pissed. Her beef is with the engraved quote etched in the foot of King’s statue, which simply reads: “I was a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness.” The problem? Martin Luther King Jr. never said that exactly. What he did say regarding his own eulogy, at Atlanta’s own Ebeneezer Baptist Church in fact, was this: “If you want to say I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.” And if you’re going to say it about the one who has “been to the mountain top,” say it right.

>> Thanks to Japanese pop singer Sputniko!’s latest design on exhibit at MoMa, will men finally get to have a period? Behold, the Menstruation Machine.

>>Though recently-imprisoned, Chinese activist and artist Ai Weiwei’s attitude is one of ultimate woo-sah. He remarked of his American audience of his L.A. exhibit of zodiac heads in L.A., “I think they have to see it as something that will be removed after a period of time. It won’t be permanent. It will be there and then it won’t be there. And enjoy the weather. Be healthy and happy.”
