The local art collective returns for their first gallery exhibition in a year

Local arts collective Plastic Aztecs return with As Above, their first exhibition in over a year, at Kibbee Gallery this weekend. The group, Erin Bassett, Becky Furey, Andrea Sanders, and Dorothy Stucki, have honed their focus on mystical, elemental, and magical imagery and converted the home-like Kibbee into an immersive ritual space.

The group’s knack for unruly and overwhelming installations work to draw the viewer into a captive sphere, but they also belie the meticulous precision of their works on paper and sculptures. As Above will include a number of collaborative drawings, a zine, dripping sculptures, delicate wood cuts, and, we imagine, plenty else.

Stucki informed CL today that their artist statement for the show will be composed of the complete lyrics to Sheryl Crow’s “All I Wanna Do” with every “I” replaced by “The Plastic Aztecs.” Thus, “All The Plastic Aztecs wanna do is have a little fun before The Plastic Aztecs die” and “The Plastic Aztecs like a good beer buzz early in the morning” may be considered as guiding statements for the work.

Check out a few images of the work and more details about the show after the jump.
