Burnaway’s Susannah Darrow headed to ArtsATL
‘It is hard to fully describe what Burnaway has meant to me over the past seven years.’
Change is coming to Burnaway. The arts website and nonprofit announced that Editor Stephanie Cash will become the interim executive director, taking over for Susannah Darrow in June. Since 2008 Darrow, a co-founder of Burnaway, has served as the executive director. After going on maternity leave next month, Darrow will assume the role of executive director at ArtsATL on Sep. 1.
Cash, who runs point for Burnaway’s editorial content, is credited with building a talented roster of writers across the city and region. The 19-year veteran of Art in America magazine in New York also introduced new content to the website, and produced the magazine’s second edition, BURNAWAY #2: Exchange. Last month, Cash initiated the launch of the Atlanta Art Guide, a breakdown of current exhibitions in the Metro area,distributed to galleries, museums, hotels, festivals, and events.
In 2013, Darrow was named one of the top 30 nonprofit leaders in Atlanta by the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, as well as being honored by Georgia Trend’s “40 Under 40” list the following year.
“It is hard to fully describe what Burnaway has meant to me over the past seven years,” Darrow said in a statement. “It has been a privilege to work with Burnaway’s talented contributors and partners, our incredible staff and board, and the community that has embraced this organization so fully.”
ArtsATL Co-Founder Catherine Fox, who serves as the website and organization’s executive director and editor, will continue her duties until Darrow arrives in September. Though she will no long serve as executive director, Fox will continue in her role as executive editor.
“For years we have admired Susannah’s many successes at Burnaway,” ArtsATL Board Chair Mary Frances Callis said, via the organization’s website. “Her passion to support and develop the arts in Atlanta is contagious, and I cannot wait for our readers to experience what she has in store for ArtsATL.”
To say that Darrow, the Georgia State grad and member of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s innovation committee, will be missed at Burnaway would be an understatement. However, the organization is confident moving forward with Cash at the helm.
“The Board of Directors extends its sincere thanks to Susannah for the hard work she has put into the foundation and expansion of Burnaway, and we wish her continued success in her future endeavors,” said Chris McClure, Burnaway’s chairman of the board of directors, said in a statement. “As Burnaway matures, Stephanie’s experience and undeniable success as editor will enable the publication to continue to increase its ambition and coverage while staying true to our core mission. We are very excited to have the opportunity to work with Stephanie as Burnaway embarks on its next phase of growth as the voice of the arts in the South and beyond.”
