In January, local DIY and ephemeral media organization Murmur announced the launch of the ¼ Program, an initiative where a guest curator takes over Murmur’s brick-and-mortar digs in the South Downtown arts district for 90 days, scoring access to a staff of volunteers and various other resources such as supplies and event promotion. The curator will transform the space into whatever they choose — maybe an art gallery? a riot grrrl music venue? a theatre for screening local short films? — and organizers are intentionally expanding their reach beyond just visual artists.

First up on the guest curator roster is Atlanta artist Grace Thorntona member of Atlanta-based creative collective Callosum with a background in early childhood education. Thornton’s turning Murmur into an on-site kid-centric workshop series for sculpture building, writing, and gallery installation dubbed Dizzy Youth. Her stint will conclude with an art show displaying the youngsters’ original works, complete with free admission and opening and closing receptions. Check Murmur’s site for details about forthcoming workshops.

In a city where everyone seems to have an idea for how to bring the community together, it’s refreshing to see a grassroots org like Murmur actually make it happen.
