This year there’s no need for the post-Valentine’s Day blues, because love is in the air at Village Theater. Beau Brown, the producer and host of the Valentine’s Day Puckin’ Fuppet show, is ready to have the whole audience rolling and LOLing. Not only will Cupid’s presence be known, but special guest artist and National Puppet Slam alum, Gwen Bonar, will make an appearance. Whether you’re single, in an open relationship, or seriously committed, this is a show for all of you secret lusters. An open mic event with no scripts, the show could go all sorts of comical directions, especially with an MC like Brown. Don’t be shocked if there is a puppet penis appearance on stage, says the producer. Oh, and he also strongly suggests pairing this comical Saturday evening at the theater with a healthy swig of your favorite spirit.
<o:p> Creative Loafing talked with Brown about Atlanta, puppetry, and what viewers can expect from this
highly competitive puppet slam. What is the Valentine’s Day Puckin’ Fuppet Show?
Beau Brown: Well, the Puckin’ Fuppet show is a puppet slam. If you have never been to one of those it’s like an adult variety show with puppets. There will be a variety of artists coming up one after another. We’ll break for intermission, then we’ll come back. There will probably be somewhere between 10 and 12 acts. They’ll all probably be Valentine’s Day themed, or romantically themed, or sexually themed or gender themed I would anticipate. Are there a lot of puppet slams that take place in Atlanta?
B.B.: The Puckin’ Fuppet Show happens three to four times a year. There is a puppet slam called Touch the Puppet Head that’s a part of the Atlanta Film Festival. That happens with the festival that will be in April. There is also the National Puppet Slam that happens here in Atlanta at the Center of Puppetry Arts every two years. That is sort of the best of the best puppet slams across the country. And one of our guest artist’s for the Valentine’s Day Puckin’ Fuppet Show is an artist named Gwen Bonar who has performed at the National Puppet Slam many times. How long have you been in the puppetry business and where did you get your start?
B.B.: I actually did get a lot of my early years of puppet work in puppet slam. There used to be a puppet slam at Dad’s Garage Theatre years ago and I participated in that one for a very long time. That’s sort of where I learned, you know, what kind of puppet slam I liked and the kind of shows I like to do. And that’s really where I got my start. Are there prizes for the puppet slam?
B.B.: Yeah. The prizes … well, the Puckin’ Fuppet show has different information depending on what month it is. At the end of the show the audience will get one vote for their favorite show they saw all night. We count the votes and announce the winner at the end of the show. The winner gets $100 cash, second prize is $75, and third is $50. How would you rate the Puckin’ Fuppet Show? PG or R?
B.B.: Puppet slam by definition is for adults. The show is 18 and up. When we say adult puppetry that could mean many different things. Sometimes it is … graphic. Sometimes it is really gloom humor. But, sometimes it just the fact that the puppet show is not written for children. Is that to say there’s not going to be puppet’s waving their wangs around? Who knows. There definitely were puppet penises at the Halloween Show. It all depends on what the artists want to do and experiment with. Check out The Valentine’s Day Puckin’ Fuppet show Sat., Feb. 20, at Village Theatre. Show starts at 11 p.m.
