Stand-up comedian and actor Eugene Mirman teams up with U.K. music legend Robyn Hitchcock for his newest nationwide tour. A stand-up veteran, Mirman’s unique take on the medium has earned him a place on Time Out New York’s 50 funniest New Yorkers, Paste’s 10 Best Comedians of the Decade, and the title of Best New York City Comedian by the Village Voice.

You might not have seen Mirman’s stand-up, but you’ve most likely have at least heard his voice. The comedian voices “Bob’s Burgers”’s Gene and also lends his voice to FX’s “Archer,” and has appeared body and all in live-action shows such as HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords,” Comedy Central’s “Delocated,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” and more.

Mirman has produced a number of albums and stand-up specials including his latest, Vegan On His Way To The Complain Store, for Netflix. Mirman’s specials are stand-outs due to both brilliance and creativity thanks to Mirman’s penchant for pranks, which he mixes into his act. Such past ventures such as trolling dating service ChristianMingle, and taking out page long ads to eviscerate Time Warner Cable add a another level of stupid joy to his specials. Watching Mirman is like watching a grown Gene Belcher do stand-up aka a dream I once had. A beautiful, silly dream. Mirman broke the mold again last year when he released his latest LP I’m Sorry, You’re Welcome, a whopping nine-volume vinyl combining stand-up, voicemails, erotic soundscapes, and a full hour of just crying for another delightfully weird masterpiece.

embed-1Mirman’s current tour buddy, Robyn Hitchcock, is one of England’s most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, bassist, and pianist, he is a musical maverick. Both perform full, separate sets Wednesday night at Variety Playhouse for a night of double-dipped entertainment.

Eugene Mirman and Robyn Hitchcock at Variety Playhouse Wed., April 20. Doors open at 7 p.m.; Show at 8 p.m. $25-30.
