Welcome to 2014. To celebrate, Georgia, along with much of the country, will be extremely cold. Snow will fall. Expect temperatures to dive into the low 20s tonight. Wear a hat. Don’t get sick.

Seriously, don’t get sick. The CDC is reporting a 23% uptick in H1N1 cases in the Southeast. Four are dead and and there have been at least 53 hospitalizations. Unlike previous outbreaks, this one is hitting young adults especially hard. It’s not just the young and the elderly that are at risk.

Israeli former prime minister Ariel Sharon has been in a coma since 2006 when he suffered a massive stroke. His medical condition has worsened as of late. An iconic figure in Israel, he is probably most widely remembered for overseeing the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlements from the Gaza Strip in 2005.

Actor James Avery died. Known best for his role as Uncle Phil on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Avery was 68. He died following complications from open heart surgery.

Colorado descended into a apocalyptic hell on earth yesterday when the nation’s first-ever sales of state-regulated recreational marijuana took place. The Centennial State you once knew is gone, probably never to return, like a puff of smoke in the wind.
