First Slice 1-8-14: Major gas leak forces Little Five Points evacuation

A major gas leak in Little Five Points forced an evacuation throughout the neighborhood yesterday afternoon. “The smell is of gasoline, not natural gas, so they’ve evacuated most of the businesses down here,” Atlanta Fire Rescue spokesperson Janet Ward told WSB-TV.

A 70-year-old man yesterday froze to death in northwest Atlanta, marking the first recorded fatality caused by this week’s harsh winter temperatures.

Finance reports show that Gov. Nathan Deal has raised more than $4 million during the past six months. That’s unsurprisingly far more cash than both his GOP challengers, Dalton Mayor David Pennington and Georgia Schools Superintendent John Barge, or Democratic frontrunner state Sen. Jason Carter, D-Decatur, have piled up to date.

Meet Rick Walker, the barber responsible for snipping Mayor Kasim Reed’s hair since his college days. “It’s a low Caesar, even all over,” he said. “He’s probably had that style for at least six years. And he is not shy at all about letting you know if he’s not liking what you’re doing. He takes his haircut very particularly.”

Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy recently turned himself into authorities for charges dating back to Sept. 2012 that include terroristic threats, false imprisonment, and battery against his son. According to an incident report, he reportedly told his child that he would “put a bullet” in his head.
