First Slice 9/18/14: Georgia unemployment rate increases to 8.1 percent

Georgia’s unemployment rate jumped to 8.1 percent in August from 7.7 percent in July.

Former President Jimmy Carter thinks sending 3,000 American troops to Africa is the right thing to do to help combat the Ebola epidemic. He also thinks it should have happened months ago. “I don’t think anybody wanted to do anything about it until the head of CDC went over there and saw how bad it was,” Carter said yesterday. “He came back home, he met with the United Nations in New York and met with President Obama in Washington and convinced them that it was almost out of control already.”

Early this morning, a tractor-trailer overturned on I-20 East. The wreck blocked lanes in both directions of Interstate 20 at Flat Shoals Road. The crash sparked a fire, which has now been extinguished. The driver was seen walking around after the accident, apparently uninjured.
