Omnivore - Moe’s and Joe’s still going strong at 60

I blame it on the Toffee-Coffee Arctic Swirl I ate last Saturday. Next, I was eating at Chili’s and last night I went to Moe’s and Joe’s (1033 N. Highland Ave., 404-873-6090). I’m on a junk-food binge!

Actually, the occasion of my visit to Moe’s and Joe’s was to pay my respects to the Virginia-Highland bar that turned 60 last month. In my late 20s and early 30s, I lived in that area and was often there. Then I quit drinking and smoking and it wasn’t much fun.

The graffiti-covered bar, washed in red neon light, still packs them in. We tried out the menu, and the best we ordered was this plate of chicken egg rolls. We couldn’t exactly figure them out but decided they were filled with chicken salad full of hot peppers. The mango chutney was kinda grim — stiff and overly sweet. Actually, I’m not sure it was really chutney, since I couldn’t find any pieces of mango in our serving.

The place, like George’s nearby, is a true throwback to the days before the Highlands became so gentrified. Check it out if you haven’t been there in a few years.
