Omnivore - Vita to open in old Mick’s location

Vita, the new Italian restaurant in the original Mick’s building at Bennett and Peachtree streets, is celebrating its grand opening with an invitation-only party March 16. The event will benefit the Emory Winship Cancer Institute.

There’s a good reason for that. The restaurant’s owner, Tony LaRocco, is celebrating recovery from a lengthy battle with leukemia.

LaRocco opened the original Fratelli di Napoli restaurant, which introduced our city to communal dining on a menu of unique New York-style Italian dishes. He opened other restaurants and eventually sold them and moved to Florida. Now he’s back. “Vita” means “life” in Italian, and the opening invitation says the restaurant’s name marks LaRocco’s “second chance at life.”

If the restaurant, which opens to the general public March 17, is as good as the original Fratelli, it should be a welcome addition to our dining scene. And congratulations to LaRocco for his successful recovery.
