Omnivore - D.B.A. Barbecue opens in Virginia-Highland
Take your whole family and order for two!
We hit the new D.B.A. Barbecue in Virginia-Highland tonight. It's located in the building last occupied by Vine, behind the post office on North Highland at Amsterdam.
I'll have more to say in this week's "Grazing" column but for the time being, here's some advice: The portions are gigantic! We ended up bringing more than half the food we ordered home.
We started with these pimento cheese and bacon "finger sandwiches" — four triangles that were more than enough for two professional eaters. We also ordered a starter of lima-bean hummus. Then we both ordered the colossal-sized combo plates with three meats each. We couldn't resist asking for a taste of the smoked tofu too (right pic). We did this so that you don't have to. Got that? Don't order it.
The new restaurant offers pulled pork, brisket, smoked chicken, smoked turkey, spare ribs and baby back ribs. There are 15 side dishes, mostly vegetarian-friendly, along with a few seafood dishes and some sandwiches.
Most of the food was good but a few of the meats, especially the chicken, were way too dry. The barbecue sauces are the usual — a sweet one that is not spicy and a sweet one that is slightly spicy. The restaurant definitely needs to develop a more flavorful, tangier sauce.
