Taqueria del Sol is featuring one of my favorite tacos, the al pastor, at lunch and dinner this week. Buttermilk fried chicken is the blue plate special. But you want the taco. In case you haven’t heard, TDS is a 2011 James Beard Award nominee for “outstanding restaurateur.” So much for the pain caused by the Taco Nazi! (Cakes & Ale has also garnered two nominations.)....
The new Mexican spot downtown isn’t the only good news from Fifth Group Restaurants. The group’s Original El Taco is celebrating Brazil’s infamous Carnaval with a special menu March 2-6:
Pozole Batido: pork and corn stew with chiles 6.50
Corunda: masa and vegetable tamales steamed in corn leaves 5.75
Taco de Mero: seared cumin-crusted grouper, chile en escabeche, caper mayonnaise 3.95
Taco de Lomitos: roasted pork bits with white beans and chiles 3.25
Carne de Res Con Col: spiced ground beef stuffed cabbage with tomato arbol sauce 9.50
Babacoa: slow-roasted beef brisket, pinto beans, house made tortillas and pasilla salsa 16.50
Sierra a la Parrila: grilled mahi mahi, mango-serrano relish, crispy achiote potatoes 16.95
Mero Frito: flash-fried grouper, caper-tomato sauce, smoked long-grain rice 19.25
Flan de Coco: baked coconut custard, macaroon and passion fruit 5.25

Goin’ Coastal, the terrific seafood restaurant in Virginia-Highland, will be open Saturday and Sunday for lunch, starting this week. Expect some new dishes, like gator tacos and po’ boys. The restaurant will open at 11 a.m. and remain open until 11 p.m. both days.
