The winners of the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards in publishing and broadcast media were announced Friday night. There are no surprises and no local winners, but we’re proud that Bill Addison of Atlanta Magazine and formerly with Creative Loafing, was nominated for his unbelievably thorough look at 58 barbecue joints in the metro area last July.

Among this year’s standouts from my own perspective is the humor award to Ruth Bourdain, the hilarious and anonymous Twitterer who is a hybrid of Ruth Reichl and Anthony Bourdain. Another award-winning favorite is Barry Estabrook, whose blog, “Politics of the Plate,” is among the very few in cyberspace that focuses on what’s behind our food culture.

It was also good to see Diana Kennedy’s Oaxaca al Gusto: An Infinite Gastronomy named cookbook of the year. I used to dine fairly often at restaurants in Austin and Houston where she was the consulting guru. If you think Mexican cooking is all frijoles refritos and enchiladas, get your hands on one of her cookbooks.

The Huffington Post has the full list of winners. Awards to chefs and restaurants should be announced Monday.
