Omnivore - Carlos Museum to host two don't miss events

David Sweeney celebrates quinoa and mummies to guzzle milkshakes

Image There are a zillion food events in the city every week, but Emory's Michael C. Carlos Museum is sponsoring two extra-special ones next month that you might want to register for now.

First is a cooking class with David Sweeney of The Bakery at Cakes & Ale, Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. The subject is the grain quinoa, which Peruvians began cultivating 4,000 years ago. Sweeney uses it to create a daily lunch special. Sweeney, owner of the defunct Dynamic Dish, is by far the best vegetarian chef in our city.

Second is the annual Halloween event, Mummies and Milkshakes, Fri., Oct. 26, at 6:30 p.m. From the Carlos Museum: "Visit animal and human mummies in the Egyptian galleries, choose your favorite Jake's Ice Cream flavor for a milkshake, and watch vintage mummy cartoons and the hilarious Three Stooges short 'We Want Our Mummy,' followed by the classic 'Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy.' Milkshakes for sale beginning at 6:30 p.m., cartoons at 7 p.m., film begins at 7:45 p.m. Free to Museum members; $5 for non-members. Costumes encouraged! Milkshakes sold separately. Galleries open from 6 to 9:30 p.m.. RSVP required."

The Carlos Museum, is located at 571 South Kilgo Cir. To register for either event, call
