Omnivore - Food blogger uses dates to pay for fancy dinners, and brags about it

For one Toronto twenty-something, every lunch is a free lunch

Not only does one Toronto woman "have a pretty face," she's got a "pretty extensive Urbanspoon wish list," too. That's part of the intro to Erin Wotherspoon's blog, A Penniless Girl, Bad Dates & Plenty of Oysters. The twenty-something "struggling actress" has been using her online dates to fund her fancy restaurant habit, and then going home to blog about it.

Wotherspoon writes:

Woe is me. I've decided to become a serial dater to fulfill my Toronto restaurant hit list ...The plan? Join a slew of dating sites to find a man, any man, even a woman to finance this delectable venture into the maze of Toronto's hottest resto nabes.

But it's not all fun and foie gras. Turns out bamboozling dudes into picking up the check isn't always as glamorous as it sounds.

"Exploiting men for meals is tough. I have to put up with a lot of bad conversation and to be honest for awhile there I didn't think I was up for the challenge," she admits.

Last week, a local mag outed Wotherspoon and the lengths she's willing to go to for a free meal.

"Masquerade as a practicing Jew in order to date guys on J-Date? Sure. ("I'd say my Hebrew is on the rougher side"). Target recent immigrants to avoid risking detection? Absolutely," Toronto Life writes.

Now there's an OKcupid subreddit warning guys in Toronto to "watch out for this girl." The thread is approaching 300 comments.

Wotherspoon's response?

This just in, sometimes women don't have the best intentions. Toronto men of Reddit, hold on to your neck beards. This girl is looking for love in her lobster roll, not your academic achievements.

But let's be honest, Wotherspoon argues, if a guy goes for it, that's his own fault:

So you meet me on the subway, I tell you I'm writing a food blog called restaurant tips from a serial dater and I tell you I'm an actress and you still agree to go out with me? Idiot.

Besides, "guys will go on dinner dates with girls, buy them drinks, and maybe take them home, sleep with them, never call them again with that being the intention," Wotherspoon tells AM640. "I don't really see how what I'm doing is sooo different from that."
