The Mayan ruins of Tulum beckon in the left side of this photo taken in May 2003. It was a birthday trip to Riviera Maya, about 45 minutes from Cancun. The thing that fascinated — and disappointed — me the most was the jewel blue ocean hundreds of feet below the main ruins site. The scene was absolutely beautiful — but I’d neglected to bring a bathing suit to enjoy the waves!
