That we have pockets of vibrant street life

There's Broad Street in downtown, where office workers come on break for falafel or burritos. There's Decatur, where young parents compete with college students for a spot at the bar. At the intersection of Virginia and Highland avenues, shoppers roam the sidewalks during the day until the partiers take over at night. Little Five Points is full of characters. And there's the West End, where Muslims, Black Hebrew Israelites, Christian street preachers, and more co-mingle in one of Atlanta's more diverse neighborhoods. The corner of Ralph David Abernathy and Lee Street has lots of mom-and-pop shops such as Laze Hair Braiding, where we dropped in on a recent Sunday afternoon and met women speaking Mandinka during a four-hour hair-braiding session: "It's very painful but it's gonna be pretty," one of them said. Moments like that make us appreciate the energy that accompanies vibrant street life.
