What’s happening in Atlanta today

I Am An Immigrant: Faces of ATL

Latin American Association - 2750 Buford Highway Atlanta, GA 30324 Free. 6 p.m.

The I Am An Immigrant campaign has partnered with the Latin American Association and Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. to bring its campaign to Georgia with I Am An Immigrant: Faces of ATL. One of the dozens of events throughout the United States celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month, I Am an Immigrant will highlight the work submitted to the LAA high school contest, “Portraying the Undocumented Experience,” and will also include a fun photo shoot featuring the popular “I am an immigrant” T-shirts shown in the I Am an Immigrant campaigns.

Roxane Gay, ’’[http://local.creativeloafing.com/event/agnes-scott-college-presser-hall-gaines-chapel/roxane-gay-hunger-a-memoir-of-my-body

Agnes Scott College - Presser Hall, Gaines Chapel - 141 E. College Ave. Decatur, GA 30030 $28. 7:30 p.m.

Serial tweeter and self-proclaimed “bad feminist” Roxane Gay rolls through Decatur. Author of the New York Times bestselling book Bad Feminist, Gay reads from her her newest book, Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body. Hunger explores Gay’s relationship with her “unruly” body following a traumatic childhood experience in an attempt to reclaim the narrative of overweight people and share her lifelong struggle with weight. The event will be hosted by Charis Books and More in collaboration with Agnes Scott College.

Big Freedia w/ Divine Interface

Terminal West - 887 W. Marietta St. N.W., Studio C Atlanta, GA 30318 $20-$25. 8:30 p.m.

The national face of bounce music breaks binary gender roles and dance floors. A Big Freedia set may not last very long, but the New Orleans diva dispenses more energy in 20 minutes than a lesser artist could muster in an hour. Her music is infectious, melding glitchy electronic beats and hip-hop in a call-and-response style that’s always best experienced live, especially with other sweaty dancers. Big Freedia is coming off of a difficult year: She received three years of probation in August after pleading guilty to housing voucher theft (an unintentional crime, she says). But her music thrives on, letting everything loose, troubles and all, and this show will be no exception.

GNR rave volume 1 ft. NO EYES, Tekkenkonkreet, Jsport, ^M^RYLL^H GOLD, Kobwe

The Mammal Gallery - 91 Broad St. S.W. Atlanta, GA 30303 $5-$10. 9 p.m.

Too often Atlanta’s electronic music landscape feels scattered, as DJs and producers outside of the EDM circuit don’t typically have an established home among punk clubs and dive bars. Lee Heikkila and Carter Sinquefield, two local electronic artists who perform as AGYN and Kobwe, respectively, are bringing together the city’s unsung electronic talent with GNR Records. The pair curate artist lineups under a broad umbrella, focusing on club music and all of its permutations. GNR Records kicks off its first of many showcases with performances from NO EYES, Tekkenkonkreet and more that coincide with the release of a cassette compilation featuring the performers.

Ziggy2Playa, Yani Mo, Allen Thomas and the Family Orchestra, DJ YUNG $LUT

529 - 529 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30316 $8-$10. 9 p.m.

With a penchant for moody, understated production and vocals that oscillate between rapping and singing, Ziggy2Playa’s style bears all the hallmarks of an Atlanta rapper with equal parts individualism and Southern style. On songs like “Intercontinental Shawty,” featuring fellow local Yani Mo, he ruminates on territorial divisions all too familiar to Atlanta citizens with lines such as, “You ain’t safe riding on the north side, ‘cause a cop is gonna jam you.” Though Ziggy has yet to release a full-length album, he’s currently working on a new project with production help from DunDeal, Left Brain (Odd Future), Asston Kusher and ProRow.’‘]
