Hoops, Pallas,Twin Studies

The Earl - 488 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30316 $10-$12. 9 p.m.

Music written to serve smooth and infectious guitar riffs often tends to revel in pristine recording qualities that rely on space and cleanliness. Bloomington, Indiana quartet Hoops bucks this trend in a curious fashion. On their debut LP, Routines (Fat Possum Records), the group’s hazy, hook-obsessed sound uses the familiar hiss and ambient fuzz reminiscent of earlier four-track recordings to create refreshing textures. The lo-fi approach tends to favor the bleak introspection of emo and slowcore, but here Hoops contrasts it with an endearing, if vague, optimism. With standout number “Rules,” sensuous bass lines and driving percussion belie subtle, dreamy keyboards that provide the perfect backdrop for their playful crooning: “Don’t wait, act now/ Do you want to have been running around? And I guess that I’ll try/ Come on over and we’ll sort something out.”
