Painter and Poet: The Wonderful World of Ashley Bryan

High Museum of Art - 1280 Peachtree St. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30309 Free-$14.50. 10 a.m.

The High Museum celebrates the creative career of author and artist Ashley Bryan with an exhibit that features more than 70 works from almost two dozen of Bryan’s children’s books. Despite a tumultuous start in life, studying art during the Great Depression and being denied access to art schools due to racism, Bryan has created art that enthralls audiences of all ages. His children’s books contain a multitude of artistic mediums like gouache paintings, ink drawings, collages, linocut prints and much more. Ashley tells stories through a wide range of artistic mediums to reflect influences from African folklore, poetry and jazz. Stop by the High to experience the colorful and textural differences in each of Bryan’s works. Don’t fret if time isn’t on your side, this exhibit is open through January 2018.

Jessie Reyez

Vinyl - 1374 W. Peachtree St. N.W. Atlanta, GA 30309 $12-$14. 8 p.m.

The considerable buzz around singer/songwriter Jessie Reyez seems warranted. Early on, the Toronto native had shown flashes of brilliance, such as in the single “Figures,” that were confirmed on her recently released debut EP, Kiddo. Though her vocal range would suggest the young siren is a budding star, it’s her girl-next-door-meets-vulgar-lounge-singer personality that resonates with listeners. Whether she’s singing her broken heart out on “Shutter Island” or using spitfire spoken-word to address a sexual predator on “Gatekeeper,” it’s easy to be drawn into her raw authenticity and vulnerability.
