5 things to do: LWBuHi Conference 2017 - September 13 2017

What’s happening in Atlanta today

Follow Your Heart

Spruill Center for the Arts - 5339 Chamblee Dunwoody Road Atlanta, GA 30338 Free. 6 p.m.

Andrew Lyman’s photography and mutlimedia installations explore the queer experience in a way the Spruill Gallery has never seen. In this solo exhibition, he grapples with coming of age, struggles and triumphs with gender, sexuality and community. After showing work in New York, Germany, France and Korea, the Atlanta native has returned home to reflect on his experience.

LWBuHi Conference 2017

Latin American Association - 2750 Buford Highway Atlanta, GA 30324 Donations. 6:30 p.m.

Living Walls and WeLoveBuHi, aka LWBuHi, present a four-day conference to celebrate Buford Highway’s cultural diversity and the conception of the BuHi Walk, a public art project and walkway connecting interior walkways and informal pedestrian paths in the neighborhood. The series kicks off on Thurs., Sept. 14 with a panel discussion of the immigrant experience in Atlanta. The fun picks up on Friday with a movie night at Canton House Chinese Restaurant and continues into Saturday, with an open-air night market and block party. Things wrap up on Sunday as the executive directors of each organization discuss the state of street art and its role in building community.

AJFF Selects: The Lavender Scare

Landmark Midtown Art Cinema - 931 Monroe Drive N.E. Atlanta, GA 30308 $15-$30. 7 p.m.

The Lavender Scare details a hidden battle during Cold War and its impact on gay people in the United States. As a result of McCarthyism, President Eisenhower signed a law banning gays and lesbians from government work in the name of national security, leading to systemic blackmail, mass firings and FBI investigations. In the film, Jewish astronomer Dr. Franklin Kameny, who fought back in court at the time, and others affected by the Lavender Scare tell their stories.

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood

Variety Playhouse - 1099 Euclid Ave. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30307 $26-$29. 8 p.m.

The Black Crowes packed it in at the beginning of 2015, when the brothers Chris and Rich Robinson failed to reach an agreement over business issues. But Chris Robinson Brotherhood, which also includes longtime Crowes keyboardist Adam MacDougall, picked up where his old band left off, bending the sound in a more loose-limbed and jammy Grateful Dead-styled direction. The CRB has endured a few personnel changes since its 2012 start, but the group has remained quite prolific, releasing six studio albums including this summer’s highly-regarded Barefoot in the Head, along with three live sets.

Night Shots

Ghanaian immigrant filmmaker Eric Bomba-Ire seeks to raise awareness for the benefits of a welcoming society in this socially and politically charged Atlanta-based film. The film’s Atlanta premiere will serve as the kick-off of Welcoming Week Atlanta, a series of events dedicated to unite immigrants, U.S.-born citizens, new Americans and all communities in welcoming and unity.
