What’s happening in Atlanta today

You Can Fly, the Tuskeegee Airmen

Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American Culture and History - 101 Auburn Ave. Atlanta, GA 30303 Free. Noon.

The Auburn Avenue Research Library and Diaspora U have paired up to commemorate the debut of illustrator Jeffery Weatherford. The exhibit pairs Weatherford’s black and white engravings of the Tuskegee Airmen with the lyrical prose of author Carol Boston Weatherford to retell the story of the first class of black military pilots from the Tuskeegee Institute. Artist talk: 3 p.m., Sat., Aug., 12.

Cocktails and Conversation: Chuck Reece and Micah Cash

Poem 88 - 1123 Zonolite Road N.E. Suite 20A Atlanta, GA 30318 Free-$85. 7 p.m.

Chuck Reece of the The Bitter Southerner chats with Poem 88 artist Micah Cash about his new book Dangerous Waters. Cash’s project documents the Tennessee Valley Authority’s waterworks. A special prix-fixe dinner will be served at the Floataway Cafe immediately following. Those hoping to dine should RSVP to info at poem88.net.

Pleasures, Cinema Nova, TV After Death

The Earl - 488 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30316 $8. 8:30 p.m.

Oftentimes the marriage of guitars and synthesizers results in a kind of stale union where only the cleanest and most overprocessed aspects of both are highlighted. South Florida group Pleasures chooses a different route, wherein mangled electronics and earsplitting guitar solos create an aura of manic horror. The result is a psychedelic pastiche where dance-floor grooves and sugary vocals anchor unpredictable songwriting. The band’s latest full-length, Fucked Up Dreams Come True, is the most cohesive distillation of the quartet’s sound. Tracks like “Gemini Twin” revel in the tension between harmony and dissonance as guitarist and singer Katherine Kelly’s melodies give way to distorted chaos.

M&M Presents: We Made A Deal With the Devil To Reunite The Beatles

The Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge - 644 N. Highland Ave. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30306 $10. 9 p.m.

Modugno and Mallory went straight to the Underworld to make a pact with the devil and bring back the Beatles. John, George, Paul, Ringo and Old Scratch himself (two of whom have been alive this whole time) take the stage for one night only. Samm Severin, Jen Lenny, Paige Bowman, Caroline Schmitt and Katie Hughes perform.

Shantih Shantih, Impossible Vacation, Minorcan, Nikki & the Phantom Callers

529 - 529 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30316 $8. 9 p.m.
