5 things to do: Samm and Jen Totally Awesome Summer Vacation Part 2 - June 28 2017

What’s happening in Atlanta today

Hebocon Atlanta

The Mammal Gallery - 91 Broad St. S.W. Atlanta, GA 30303 Free. 5 p.m.

On July 19, 2014, the first Hebocon competition took place in Tokyo, henceforth starting the most unpredictable, now international robotics event. Hebocons, or “the robot contest for dummies,” are robot sumo wrestling competitions celebrating those who are technically enthusiastic but ultimately ungifted. The first Atlanta Hebocon will continue the celebration, beginning with a four-hour session where attendees will partake in the skill of robot making, followed by a sumo tournament between the first 32 robots made.

Home Improvement: Art by Atlanta’s Homeless Youth

Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery - 88 Forsyth St. S.W. Atlanta, GA 30303 $22.50-$50. 6 p.m.

The surfaces of our homes are littered with items some decorative, others necessary, but many of them deeply personal. Each of the artists in ChopArt’s Home Improvement show has created a work of art out of commonplace household items or furniture to illustrate the concept of home for those who don’t have a stable physical residence. Youths from shelters such as Families First, Nicholas House and Rainbow House will have artwork available for purchase, and funds will support their future endeavors. The event will include a cash bar and an opportunity to meet the artists.

Samm and Jen Totally Awesome Summer Vacation Part 2

The Music Room - 327 Edgewood Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30312 $5. 8 p.m.

This ain’t your grandma’s variety show. It’s not your dad’s, either. It’s Samm Severin and Jen Lenny’s show. These two gems from the Atlanta comedy scene give Beavis and Butthead a run for their money as they bring sketch and stand-up and oddball glee together in Edgewood with the return of their variety series, Samm and Jen Totally Awesome Summer Vacation Part 2. The night will feature stand-up from the likes of funny folks Katie Hughes, Dedrick Flynn and more sandwiched between the summer’s wildest pool party from hell. It’s weird-in-the-best-way sketch comedy and you’re invited. No floaties or goggles necessary.

DJs Talib Kweli And Vikter Duplaix

595 North Event Venue & Lounge - 595 North Ave. Atlanta, GA $15-$20. 9 p.m.

Brooklyn-born lyricist and one-half of Black Star (along with Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def), Talib Kweli is a stylish and self-made thinker and doer who continually raises the bar for hip-hop in the 21st century. On the heels of releasing his latest album, The Seven, Kweli’s street-hardened thinking man vibe blends with Vikter Duplaix’s glowing baby-making bedroom jams as they tag team the turntables for the Kiss-N-Grind party. Duplaix has become a house-rocking fixture for the party, which is something of an L.A. nightlife institution. Now, he’s spreading the good times to the rest of the country one city at a time.

Outkast vs. A Tribe Called Quest feat. DJ Rasta Root, Mr. DJ

Aisle 5 - 1123 Euclid Ave. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30307 $10-$20. 9 p.m.
