What’s happening in Atlanta today

Grant Park Summer Shade Festival 2017

Grant Park - 840 Cherokee Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30312 Free. 8 a.m.

Raising approximately $87,000 for the Grant Park Conservancy at the 2016 event, the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival once again welcomes music and art lovers to Atlanta’s oldest park for two days of nonstop fun. Presented by and benefiting the Grant Park Conservancy, the festival features an impressive lineup of live music throughout the weekend on two stages in addition to an expansive artist market, Kids Zone, 5K run and a dedicated VIP area. The 15th annual Summer Shade Festival will also have a diverse selection of local food trucks with offerings for all tastes, Monday Night Brewing craft beer, Bold Rock Cider, and Frida Khalo Tequila and Status Vodka cocktails. On Saturday morning at 8 a.m., runners, walkers and strollers are welcome to kick off the weekend’s festivities during the annual Adams Realtors Run for the Park 5K, which includes free kid’s tot trot for ages 5 and under and a stroller stroll along the race course. Raising funds to support the Grant Park Conservancy and its efforts to restore the park, the course map start and finish at the main entrance to Zoo Atlanta.

Shabazz Palaces, Porter Ray, the Morekestra

Terminal West - 887 W. Marietta St. N.W., Studio C Atlanta, GA 30318 $15-$18. 9 p.m.

On the heels of releasing two albums in July, Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star and Quazarz vs. the Jealous Machines (Sub Pop), Shabazz Palaces are on the road again. Ishmael Butler, aka Palaceer Lazaro, and Tendai “Baba” Maraire continue plumbing the depths of stream-of-consciousness hip-hop, but they’ve given their latest round of offerings a conceptual bent. Each show is punctuated by psychedelic beats, lumbering lyrical flows and William S. Burroughs-style narratives emanating from a stage shrouded in murky visuals, setting a scene that could have been plucked from a dream from black America’s collective subconscious.

The Big Huge Tiny House Event

Ponce City Market - 675 Ponce de Leon Ave. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30308 Free-$5. 10 a.m.

The big advantages of tiny house life will be on display at the Big Huge Tiny House event at Ponce City Market. The weekend will be filled with workshops, speakers and tours, aimed at inspiring a new group of people to downsize. For the Atlantans who love their sprawling lawns and five bedroom homes, this is a chance to see the upsides of living small.
