The Big Thing

978 Hank Aaron Drive S.E. Atlanta, GA 30315 $5. 6:30 p.m.

Jay Samuel has curated another opportunity to explore different corners of the Atlanta DIY music scene in one stop. In an effort to create an inclusive space and performance lineups that don’t stick to a single genre, this Saturday’s return of the Big Thing features artists from realms of bedroom hip-hop to free-flowing jazz and crunchy Latinx punk. Notably featured is rapper and hip-hop artist Z̩, who debuted a video for his song “Telephone” in February, as a refute to racial and homophobic stereotypes. There will also be tabling of local artists and a late-night DJ set by King Nappa. With Z̩, Bitter, Dandy Warhol, Hio, Monte Qarlo, Harlot Party, Bagelboiz, the Callous Daoboys, Michael Cera Palin, NEWMONEY, Yams Club, Gin Bottle.

How Nice

Murmur - 100 Broad St. S.W. Atlanta, GA 30303 Free. 7 p.m.

Murmur - resident artist Barry Lee will depart from his usual illustrative style in How Nice. Instead of creating large scale murals and illustrations, like the ones he has around Atlanta, Lee experiments with photography, video and sound installation. Lee has done professional works for Octane, MailChimp, TEDx and CL’s Free Will Astrology, but his first solo exhibition will delve into his personal life. In How Nice, Lee presents his experiences as a queer, disabled male, which include social and romantic misadventures influenced by misrepresentation of disability in culture and media. A few of Lee’s installations are exclusive to the opening and will be on display for one night only.

Georgia Soul Council

529 - 529 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30316 $10. 9 p.m.

The Georgia Soul Council originally formed as the backing band for singer Otis Redding III back in 2010. Since then, the jazz/funk/soul seven-piece has continued playing as a collective as its members Rob Robinson (drums), Gabe Fleming (percussion), John Halpin (guitar), Adam Holliday (electric organ), Brian Didsbury (bass/vocals), Jason Young (trumpet/flugelhorn), Jordan Shalhoup (saxophone) blend elements of jazz-funk and Afrobeat. The group released its What’s For Breakfast LP in August 2016, an album that lays down infectious rhythms and remains beat heavy with grooves of organ and brass from beginning to end.
