It's been 60 years since the birth of Stax Records, the record company that defined Southern soul music in the 1960s, with artists like Otis Redding, the Staple Singers and Isaac Hayes. To celebrate, the Vista Room, in partnership with Stax Records' Soulsville Foundation, hosts a night of gospel-infused tributes and covers. Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics, whose buttery, swaggering sound might be Atlanta's closest answer to the Stax legacy, headlines a show that promises both deep cuts and soul classics. A do-gooder plus: Ticket sales benefit the Stax Music Academy, a Memphis after-school program for student musicians.
