In the midst of a social media-obsessed society and volatile political climate, Josh Tillman, under the moniker Father John Misty, is thriving. While maintaining his signature sweeping orchestral arrangements, the ex-Fleet Foxes drummer’s third album deviates from the romantic lyrical themes of 2013’s acclaimed I Love You, Honeybear.

Tillman’s latest album, Pure Comedy, gorgeously paints the hellish future awaiting our inevitably dystopian nation, complete with citizens “bedding Taylor Swift every night inside the Oculus Rift” and a dying man using his final seconds of life to check his news feed. Despite Tillman’s eagerness to discuss the cosmic indifference of the universe, it’s hard not to laugh at the comedy of man.
