J.D. MCPHERSON: Undivided Heart & Soul

With his roots-based rock and blues sound, it’d be easy to label J.D. McPherson’s new album Undivided Heart as Americana. Likewise, each comfortably familiar-sounding song reclaims modern garage rock’s greatness, shedding the genre’s juvenile trappings. Such upbeat rockers as “Bloodhound Rock” and “Under the Spell of City Lights” are the product of seasoned musicians recapturing roots-based sounds. McPherson and his supporting cast went all in on mirroring the past, recording the album at RCA’s historic Studio B in Nashville. McPherson’s most memorable new offering, though, is “Jubilee.” It’s a tender, low-tempo love song in the vein of prom night’s best slow dance number, circa 1960-something. In this context, rocking riffs and a whirring Wurlitzer go from weapons in a war to preserving rock music’s subtle nuances. ★★★☆☆
