‘Avengers’ cast hosts benefit reading of ‘Our Town’ for Puerto Rico relief
The stars aim to extend their super powers beyond the screen
Scarlett Johansson and her Avengers costars, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., and Jeremy Renner, will perform a reading of Thornton Wilder’s classic play Our Town at the Fox Theatre Mon., Nov. 6 to benefit the Hurricane Maria Community Relief and Recovery Fund.
With 70 percent of Puerto Rico still without power, most residents have been left in darkness since the storm made landfall in early September. Towns in remote locations, often most desperate for aid, are without cell service or internet access, making communication between towns and back to the continental U.S. nearly impossible. The Center for Popular Democracy created the Hurricane Maria Community Relief and Recovery Fund to bring resources and recovery efforts to isolated and vulnerable communities.
Our Town rings of a universality and call to human compassion as it delves into the experience being alive, falling in love and facing death. “It is a great privilege to be able to participate in whatever way I can, to provide some relief to those that are struggling to access even the most basic of human needs in the aftermath of this disastrous event,” Johansson says, currently in Atlanta filming Avengers: Infinity Wars. Revered Atlanta-based director Kenny Leon will direct the performance.
