VIDEO PREMIERE: Gunpowder Gray unveils ‘Revolver’

The group’s latest video is a hard rock hell ride complete with lingerie, lipstick and guns

Local lethal rock ‘n’ rollers Gunpowder Gray have been keeping busy since the group’s debut in 2014. In March, the four-piece released its Premonition EP on cassette via Boris Records, and kicked off its tour in May. Now the group unveils the music video for its new single, “Revolver.”

The black and white video was directed by Paige Barlow and Ben Winston, and shot in a space the band members Chris Wolfgang Heffernan (guitar/vocals), Sam Vaughan (bass/vocals), Alex Parra (lead guitar), and Justin Smith (drums) helped renovate. The space at Westview doubles as a church and as a practice space for local musicians.

The video wasn’t originally intended to be shot in black and white, but it evokes a simpler time of rock ‘n’ roll. “Ben and I are local artists that specialize in emulsion-based still and motion picture film,” says Barlow. “Part of the reason we choose to shoot on film is the sense of rawness it evokes. ???Revolver’ was shot on black and white Super 8mm film, which makes for a classic, gritty picture.?۝

The song is straight up heavy riff-driven rock ‘n’ roll in the same vein as Moțrhead and Thin Lizzy, with stack-on-stack Marshall amplifiers and a sing-along chorus: “Revolver, revolver/Can’t you hear the devil’s calling?” The band plays in an abandoned space in front of pews and the video cuts to a gaggle of tattooed pin-up girls sporting lingerie, dark lipstick and guns.

“My personal intention was to create a climactic video that reflected the band’s energy on stage,” says Barlow. “I saw them play live at the Highlander (for the umpteenth time) shortly before we began shooting. It was then that the storyline came together, which follows a game of Russian roulette.”
