Wolfe’s latest album, ‘Hiss Spun,’ brings her affinity for doom and drama to the fore
Chelsea Wolfe has spent the better part of a decade artistically evolving and defying categorization. Wolfe emerged in 2010 with her first studio album, The Grime and the Glow, an aptly titled collection of murky, lo-fi folk tunes covered in grit and steeped in mystery. Each subsequent release has seen Wolfe slowly lift the metaphoric veil, revealing more direct songwriting and expansive production. Where 2015’s ominous Abyss hinted at heavier, metal-centric aesthetics, Wolfe’s latest album, Hiss Spun (released Sept. 22 via Sargent House), brings her affinity for doom and drama to the fore. Soaring, teeth-rattling epics like “16 Psyche” and “Vex” showcase a command of both the metallic and experimental, feeling at once effortless and agonized.
