When asked to describe the musical call-and-response that his Southern jam outfit Gov’t Mule does onstage, guitarist and Asheville, N.C. native Warren Haynes says: “Group improvisation is even more effective than one guy blowing on top of what the rest of the band is doing. When there’s a musical conversation going on, to the listeners, and speaking for myself, it’s much more exciting.” Though musically speaking, Gov’t Mule’s rollicking sound has more in common with the country-rock of North Mississippi Allstars and the Allman Brothers Band — Haynes even played lead guitar for the latter — the group packs scorching blues-rock licks to the rafters.
