In a sweltering Southern landscape b about 60 years from now b a second Civil War has divided the country. Rising ocean levels have consumed much of the coastal U.S., a plague has decimated the population and a fossil fuel prohibition is in effect. In his debut book, American War: A NovelB (Knopf), journalist and author Omar El Akkad tells the story of Sarat Chestnutbs journey from childhood innocence to serve the zealots of war.

Like all good science fiction the story unfolds in the future, but itbs a veiled metaphor for mistakes made in the here and now. For A Cappella Booksb Writers @ the Wrecking Bar series, El Akkad signs copies of American War and discusses the bookbs cautionary tale, and how it relates to the modern world.

Free. 7 p.m. Tues., May 16. Wrecking Bar Brewpub, 292 Moreland Ave N.E. 404-221-2600. www.wreckingbarbrewpub.com.
