SPRIG: Guitarist and composer Gyan Riley

Guitarist and composer Gyan Riley makes a stop at the Bakery tonight (April 16), playing songs from his most recent album, Sprig. The son of minimalist composer Terry Riley, the young Riley’s compositional and improvisational playing style evokes flourishes of Spanish musical textures as his fingers move swiftly across his guitar strings.

Gyan has collaborated and worked alongside everyone from the San Francisco Symphony, the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain, the late great Lou Reed, his father, and many others. But his work truly shines in a solo acoustic setting, where each pieces takes shape as a marvelously emotional fugue, with moments of harmony moving at the glowing pace of a bird in flight. Shannon Lachot opens the show. Riley’s performance will be followed by an 11 p.m. open improv jam session.

$7. 8 p.m. The Bakery, 825 Warner St. www.thebakeryatlanta.com.
