GROWING COMMUNITY: Second Self Beer Company and B’s Cracklin’ BBQ are teaming up to support the Carver Hills Community Garden.

The Carver Hills neighborhood in Northwest Atlanta is classified as a food desert, an under-developed urban area with little access to fresh and affordable produce. Lower economic development in the neighborhood means there are few food markets nearby, and many residents cannot afford transportation to a local grocer. Healthy food means a healthy community, and Carver Hills has partnered with the AgLanta Grows-A-Lot program — which invites people to apply and adopt vacant, city-owned property to start urban gardens — to build a plot for residents to grow fresh fruits and vegetables together. But gardening requires equipment and supplies, and the guys at Second Self Beer Company and B’s Cracklin’ BBQ are teaming up to host a full day of craft beer, food, and activities. A portion of all event proceeds will benefit the Carver Hills Community Garden. Help your fellow Atlantans help themselves by consuming copious amounts of craft beer and quality food. Bonus: there will be a petting zoo with goats.

Free entry. 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Sat., June 2. Second Self Beer Company, 1317 Logan Circle N.W. 678-916-8035. www.secondselfbeer.com.
