THAT SUMMER FEELING: Virginia-Highland Summerfest kicks off on June 9
By Jake Van Valkenburg Thursday June 7, 2018 11:25 am EDT
Round up the kids and drag your partner off the couch, ’cause Virginia-Highland Summerfest is back for its 35th year! Organizers are going all out featuring hundreds of painters, sculptors, and jewelers from across the Southeast, and a 5K Road Race featuring more than 1,500 runners (with a “Tot Trot” to match so the kids can waddle their way to the finish line too). Funk powerhouse Kung Fu and singer-songwriter Alex Guthrie are taking over the main stage, and brews from Red Hare and Goose Island will quench your summer thirst. Support your neighbors, local artists, and restaurants, and ring in the summer on a good note. Plus, it’s free. So what’s your excuse? Free. 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Sat., June 9; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun., June 10.Virginia Ave. at North Highland Ave. www.vahi.org/summerfest
Taking up the torch from the Allman Brothers, the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Drive-By Truckers have fine-tuned their craft with years of touring, contemplation, and sharing the stage with some of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest. Now, for a sunny summer night, they bring their jam-infused Southern rock to the fabulous Fox Theatre.
With Drive-By Truckers and the Marcus Kind Band. $29-$125. 6:30 p.m....
