SHANNON & THE CLAMS

Onion, the latest album from California surf punk outfit Shannon & the Clams finds the band overcoming grief. Following 2016’s deadly fire at Ghost Ship, an Oakland warehouse-turned-artist collective, frontwoman Shannon Shaw and guitarist Cody Blanchard sought ways to reconcile the tragedy that rocked their community. Swapping her trademark bravado for a more restrained, melancholy delivery, Shaw’s vocals are positively velvety when compared with the gritty wails heard on previous records. While much of the bombast of earlier Clams output is absent, their affinity for doo-wop rhythms and bar-band jangle remains intact, providing a familiar backdrop to meditations on heartache and loss.

With Paint Fumes. $17-$19. July 20, 8 p.m. (doors). Terminal West, 887 West Marietta St. N.W., Studio C. 404-876-5566. www.terminalwestatl.com.
