CLASSIC OUTLAW: Gritty and potent, Morgan’s sets are half rowdy foot stomping and half down-hearted slow dance.

Since 2005, Eric Allen, who performs under the moniker Whitey Morgan, has tirelessly toured his brand of authentic, honky-tonk swagger across the country. Hailing from Flint, Michigan, Morgan’s take on classic outlaw country distinctly reflects his hometown’s hardscrabble spirit. Tales of hard-fought battles and even harder drinking go down easy with the aid of Morgan’s vocal delivery, wavering between a languid drawl and a ferocious growl. After recording his 2010 breakout record Whitey Morgan and the 78’s (Bloodshot Records) at the legendary Levon Helm Studio, and being gifted songs by the likes of Dale Watson, this rising star has country cred to spare. His electrifying live performances have cemented him as a true original and a force with which to be reckoned. Gritty and potent, Morgan’s sets are half rowdy foot stomping and half down-hearted slow dance.

$20. 7:30 p.m. Fri., Aug. 24. Variety Playhouse. 1099 Euclid Ave. N.E. 404-524-7354.
