Gwinnett says ‘No’ to MARTA

Atlanta Headlines March 20, 2019

Citizens of Gwinnett Country voted down the expansion of MARTA into their neighborhoods by a margin of 54 to 46. While the 9% differential is notable, in a pathetic show of voter turnout, only 16.92% of eligible voters cast a vote. In all, 91,982 voted from a registered voter pool of 543,485.

To contrast these numbers, 338,125 Gwinnett votes were cast in the 2018 Governor’s race. Gwinnett went 178,097 to 132,998 over Brian Kemp in November.

While there was some organized opposition, the path was cleared for pro-transit Gwinnett leadership to press their case. No doubt a lot of second guessing going on today.
