Pope promotes Atlanta archbishop to DC Diocese

Atlanta Headlines April 3, 2019

Pope Francis has named Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory to be the Archbishop of the DC diocese. Gregory will be the first African-American Archbishop for the diocese and he may be on his way to being the first African-American Cardinal.

Gregory has a tough job playing cleanup to a major child sex scandal which led to the previous Archbishop’s resignation.

As Atlanta’s Archbishop, Gregory set a progressive tone on issues like the environment, gay rights, and immigration and set an Atlanta’s Action Plan to guide the church in a way that reflects Pope Francis’ vision.

The AJC has a nice roundup of comments from Atlanta;s spiritual community. Gregory has been Archbishop in Atlanta since 2005.
