Music critic and author Stephen Kearse recently stopped by Creative Loafing’s Short Notice studio to talk about his debut novel In the Heat of the Light, out August 6 via Brain Mill Press.

In his book, Kearse tells the story of a young Atlanta-based graffiti crew that makes a hit on Stone Mountain's bas-relief carving of confederate figures Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. As the story unfolds everyone involved experiences a summer that changes their lives forever.

For this interview, Kearse talks about his relationship with the South, how he approached the story and the characters he created for his first book, and his affinity for superheroes.
