NEWS BRIEF: Stonecrest mayor charged with stealing federal COVID funds

Jason Lary, the mayor of Stonecrest, has been arraigned on federal charges of wire fraud, conspiracy, and federal program theft in connection with a scheme to steal federal funds from COVID-19 pandemic relief allocations. Lania Boone, his bookkeeper, is facing conspiracy charges as well. The indictment alleges Lary and Boone used part of a $6.2 million grant to pay outstanding taxes, property costs, dues to the Georgia Campaign Finance Committee, political advertising, and college expenses for Boone’s son. justice.gov
