NEWS BRIEF: “Fairness” policy bans trans women from competing in female swimming
‘There are plans to implement a new open category for transgender swimmers’
The victory of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas at the US collegiate championships in Atlanta in March has prompted a new policy which effectively bans women like her from competing. FINA, the global entity governing the sport, voted 71 percent in favor of the rule — which takes effect June 20 — along with 152 national federations gathered Sunday at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest.
“It is not feasible for people who have transitioned to compete without having an advantage,” said FINA president Husain Al-Musallam, adding that there are plans to implement a new open category for transgender swimmers but “no one knows how it’s going to work.” Details: gcn.ie
