“Our goal is to use this input to make community-based recommendations to the city that make us safer,”

For the next year, the Southern Center for Human Rights will be examining policing, violence and safety in Atlanta, the agency’s Abby Cook said in an email. SCHR will be holding meetings open to residents who will serve as paid community experts within each Atlanta Police Department zone.

“Our goal is to use this input to make community-based recommendations to the city that make us safer,” Cook wrote. “We also seek to raise awareness within the community about the relationship between policing and violence in Atlanta while examining things like racial and economic disparities between zones.” SCHR is currently confirming dates and locations for each convening with an estimated timeline of mid-July to mid-August.
