NEWS BRIEF: Herschel Walker paid for a woman to have an abortion, report says

Embattled US Senate candidate Herschel Walker is denying allegations made in an Oct. 4 article in The Daily Beast which says he paid for a woman to have an abortion in 2009. Reporter Roger Sollenberger writes the unnamed woman showed him evidence that included “a $575 receipt from the abortion clinic, a ‘get well’ card from Walker, and a bank deposit receipt that included an image of a signed $700 personal check from Walker.” The woman’s account was corroborated by a friend who looked after her while recovering from the procedure, Sollenberger added.

“I can tell you right now I never asked anyone to get an abortion — I never paid for an abortion,” the staunchly conservative ex-footballer insisted in response to the article. Walker’s son Christian posted his own response on Twitter: “Every family member of Herschel Walker asked him not to run for office, because we all knew (some of) his past. Every single one. He decided to give us the middle finger and air out all of his dirty laundry in public, while simultaneously lying about it. I’m done.” Details: slate.com
