Slang’s Facebook page does not categorize the local four-piece as part of any specific indie or punk offshoot. Instead, it simply says “storytelling” next to genre. No better word sums up the bizarre yet effective mashup of lo-fi pop and cabaret flair heard throughout the band’s self-titled debut. What sets the group apart from other indie rock upstarts is singer Hayes Hoey’s dramatic displays of both comedy and tragedy. His range as a vocalist and actor allow him to mimic a jovial Bryan Ferry for “Sleep Well, My Jolene” and recite the macabre ramblings of a lunatic on “Dane.” The tales Hoey weaves into every one of his powerful performances is complemented by an art/glam-rock backing track. His finest hour comes with “I Am No Healer,” an old time Baptist sermonette that celebrates the spirited pulpit pleas that translated well to secular roots music. ★★★★☆
