The Atlanta Open Orthographic Meet began in 1971 with a group of drinking buddies who hung out at the Stein Club in midtown Atlanta. The Stein Club closed after the 2000 contest and the bee moved to Manuel’s Tavern in 2001. It’s still going strong, 40 years after the original bar bet!
